Trip Report: Moreton Island

Published Sun 13 Mar 2016

Last Sunday a sneaky dive trip to the western side of Moreton Island was hastily arranged by Chris Joyce after the trip to Flinders Reef for the open water students was cancelled due to weather concerns.

A 60 min drift dive was conducted by Mark and Laura at Combie point. A surface marker was towed on the dive as we made our way along the wall with schools of Surgeon fish, rabbit fish, sting rays and parrot fish being observed.

Following an hour surface interval, our second dive was on the Curtin wrecks. Again this was a drift dive on a waning incoming tide. The highlight of the dive was being encircled by a school of barracoota for 5 minutes towards the end of the dive.

The third dive of the day was a long dive of 90 mins on the Curtin wrecks by Ben and Chris using rebreathers. The divers stumbled on an “orgy of string rays”. The only reason our divers did not dare to investigate at a closer range was Ben had neglected to apply sunscreen in the morning. As any experienced Tech diver knows, one should never be exposed to damaging “Rays” without using protection ………

Thanks to Chris for organising and suppling the water transport for the day.
