Tools and Spares to Bring on Dives

It's good to be self reliant and bring the tools, parts and spare kit that you may need on a dive.

This has become particularly important with COVID-19 as equipment sharing is discouraged and either involves disinfection or a higher risk of exposure.

Personal kit - all divers

  • Spare mask strap, fin strap that will fit your make of mask and fin
  • Spare batteries e.g. for your camera and dive computer, and the tools required to replace batteries
  • Personal bottles of mask defogging solution and alcohol-based hand sanitiser - both will need to be kept handy
  • Pain killers - e.g. Ibuprofen and/or Paracetemol according to your needs - in case of minor injuries
  • Droplet-control face-masks for surface situations when you cannot maintain separation from others.
  • Consider a 9mm allen key for cylinder valve inserts. (Get instruction on how to correctly insert and remove these.)
  • Consider a spare diving mask in case yours is damaged or lost.

General items

  • Items for field repairs: 4mm bungee, zip ties, duct tape and thin, strong nylon line
  • Tools: small stainless steel pliers or multi-tool, small Bic lighter
  • Other useful things: double ender, small bolt snap

If you have your own regulator set and/or BC

Speak to someone with suitable knowledge and experience about what you should attempt to do in the field, and the things you will need. Make sure to get proper instruction - knowledge and good technique is needed for even simple tasks!
