Sea Slug Census

Published Sat 06 Oct 2018

With the aim of help out with some citizen science Brisbane BSAC took part in the 3rd Annual Gold Coast Sea Slug Census by doing two dives at Cook Island. The census is designed to help researchers learn more about the species and numbers of nudibranch found in Gold Coast waters.

Divers in buddy pairs are asked to take a photo of every sea slug found on their dive and to note the approximate size, depth and site information. All divers who provide photos and notes are then eligible for prizes. We thought we were pretty good finding 5 or 6 species but that was nothing compared to the winners who spotted over 40! There were also a lot of other creatures hanging around including some friendly turtles and a school of small squid.
