Julian Rocks - 5 November 2016

Published Sat 05 Nov 2016

After a week of not so promising weather and sea condition reports, it was very exciting when we found out that the diving at Julian Rocks, with Blue Bay Divers, would be going ahead. This was Jordan and my first dive with Brisbane BSAC and we were raring to get in the water again and to try out our new kit!

We all arrived nice and early for our dive, the weather was looking good and the conditions were favourable. After our on-land sea briefing, we piled onto the boat and off we went. The trip out to the dive site was pretty short and sweet, although there was bit of swell- must have been caused by those whales breaching in the distance!

The first dive was around an hour long, and we were lucky enough to see a great array of sea life. There were grey nurse sharks, (lots and lots of) wobbygongs, turtles, moray eels, nudibranchs, rays and tonnes of fish! The dive took us around part of the rock, and through a swim through, where the fish were so chilled that I bumped into one of them! It was a great first dive, although I was ready for a hot drink when I surfaced.

The second dive was just as awesome as the first and was again full of life. The visibility for both dives was good, probably around 20m (although my sense of distance can often be out by a good 20m), and there was only a gentle current.

Back on dry land, we all regrouped at the pub in Brunswick Heads for a drink and lunch with what seemed like an endless amount of chips and wedges. A great way to finish a mornings diving.

We had a fantastic time, everyone was great company and it was nice to survive my first dive with scary looking sharks. Laura did a great job organising the trip- thank you- and we appreciated everyone pointing out different aquatic life to us on the dives! Looking forward to our next trip with the club!
