Beqa Lagoon, Fiji 18-25 August 2018

Published Sat 25 Aug 2018

Similar to Bali, we had a longish drive from the airport to the resort, arriving just after dark. The resort was comfortable with a beach-side bar and a long sandy beach, our rooms were large and airy with outdoor showers.

A rather flash resort and the cafe strip of Pacific Harbour were a short walk away, giving us plenty of options for lunch and dinner, and local crafts to browse. One diver made it their aim to have a fresh coconut from the entrepreneurial lads who setup in front of the shops, asking the bus to make a short stop on the way back to the resort after the dives.

We had a non-dive day mid-week, while most went on a trip up the river to visit a village and float back downstream, others went shopping, pearls anyone?

A few keen members booked a night dive, the rest of us walked along the beach to dinner and waved them good bye as they headed into the dusk.

Some people's highlights:

- bumping into another club member who was on their way home while awaiting our flight at Brisbane airport.

- trying to fit everyone on the small deck of our room.

- getting nudged in the shoulder by a rather large female bull shark while taking photos in front of the BSAC pack

- Top three highlights: 1. shark feed 2. shark feed 3. shark feed! The sharks were definitely the highlight. Otherwise the corals - gorgonian fans in particular and the vis - watching the BSAC “squadron”. I was also struck by the size of the 2 conger eels being tempted out from under the wreckage at the Bistro and the number of garden eels at the wreck. I thought the river trip was a lot of fun and worth doing.

- just how relaxing and easy it was - no stress... just fun easy dives in the morning (without needing much in the way of travelcalm!) and napping/reading all afternoon. Cocktails were good too!

- diving in an exotic location with a fabulous group of people (I think there is a real camaraderie in the group, and on top of the diving, that made for a really enjoyable trip). The night dive because it was amazing to see the green eyes of the reef sharks, and seeing an octopus and slipper lobster, which we didn’t see at the same site during the day. The diving (yes, I really enjoy diving!)

Many thanks to Laura for organising, various people for being DL of the day, Donna for organising the river trip, looking forward to the next one!
